The ubiquitous Radio Shack abounds.
Shields Electronic Supply, 4722 Middlebrook Pike 7921, Western Ave/O.R.Hwy. to 640 Plaza and right to Middlebrook ~1/2 mile on left.

There are others too many to list.
Google/Yahoo for "electronic compontents, Knoxville"

I did the search, but didn't see so may good looking results. Do the TV/Radio repair shops have a lot of "robot" parts? For reference, here is a dump of the results of my searches. Anyone recognize these?

Roland, what parts are you looking for?

I was looking for some basic things like transistor, photodiodes, LEDs. But I was very busy and didn't have time to call the shops yet.

Your best bet then is probably Shields or Industrial Electronics just off of Cogdill in knoxville. I can't guarantee that Industrial sells to individuals but I used to do a lot of business with them professionally. Shields definitely will sell to anyone off of the street but they are pretty much over priced on nearly everything.

Cogdill is a short street off of Middlebrook, opposite the large KUB complex.

Shields will sell to all comers, not a 'picky' type distributor. Well stock with the common items, will order unique and unusual items.
