Microsoft Robotic Developer Studio (RDS) comes with a Visual Simulation Environment (VSE) which is a virtual world that obeys the laws of physics. Developers use VSE to run their robots in a virtual world using the same code used in the real world. VSE allows you to do this because the entities that you place in VSE look, behave, act, and communicate the same way that real hardware components do.

You can use it to test advance algorithms such as system control and AI without buying any hardware. Once you get your code working in VSE, then you use the same code to control your robot using real robot hardware.

For example, if you want to build a robot using various sensors such as a laser range finder, camera, and bumpers located on various parts of a vehicle and you wanted to develop code to use the data from these sensors to control the vehicle as it navigates through a small town, you can use Microsoft RDS (Robotic Developer Studio) and VSE to build and test all your code and see if it really works as expected before buying and testing in a real robot vehicle.

This meeting will show you the basics for creating your virtual world and some of the tools and services available. The meeting is expect to be 2 hours and all are welcome.

I will provide a 6 hour training session (with frequent breaks) covering only the basics of using Microsoft Robotics Developer Studio (MRDS) for building robotic systems. We will cover CCR, DSS, and the most used tools so you will gain a working knowledge of how to build robots using this technology.

You will need a portable (laptop or notebook) PC running either Windows XP or Vista. You will also need Visual Studio Express 2008 (free) configured to use C#. I will bring the installation S/W on a thumb drive so we can load your PC at the begin of the training session. We will start the actual training at 10:30 AM. Come at 10:00 AM if you don't have the S/W installed.

This meeting will cover the just released version (2.0).

All are welcome.

For those of you who are new, we started a new project a few weeks ago that uses robotic arms to fold socks in a basket. This meeting is a continuation of earlier meetings and we will show where we are and what is left to do.

In this meeting, I will demonstrate the two robotic arms and cameras in a jerry-rigged platform. This should give us plenty of feedback of what may or may not work. We will use VPL (Visual Programming Language) to graphically make modifications to the "steps" required to fold socks.

Besides the other arm, I have ordered a couple of bumper switches and pressure sensors that can be mounted on the arms. We can use them to experiment with what works with soft objects.

What will not be done before this meeting is the image processing / feature extraction/ AI capabilities needed to figure out where to properly grip the socks. Also not started are the subtleties of how to manipulate soft objects with robotic arms and the manufacturing of robotic parts. We will identify what needs to be done and all of you are welcome to jump in.

In our first meeting, we built the arm service that drives a 6 jointed robotic arm. In this meeting we will demonstrate the arm service (with a few additions). Then we will build the camera service that grabs 320 x 240 images from a webcam using MS Robotics Studio. These images will feed into algorithms that do object recognition, image processing, and AI.

All are welcome.

In this meeting we will use Microsoft Robotics Studio to design and implement a service to control the Lynxmotion 6 robotic arm for use in the Deformable Object Manipulation project. This is the second meeting of this group and all those who have signed on to this project are invited. These members don't need to rsvp to attend.

We just started this project last week and we have identified an approach. The project will use two robotic arms to fold clothes (socks) using some simplifying assumptions. The purpose of this workshop is to work through some issues and build a service using MS technology to control the robotic arm.

Audrey Moore Rec Center is about 1 minute from the beltway. Just take Braddock road West from the beltway, then take the first right into the rec center. Drive almost a mile and you will see it on the left. Lots of parking.

I'm opening this up to other members because we have room for at most 3-4 more people (currently have 6). If you want to follow along and build the service on your laptops, bring them. Just install MS Visual Studio (Express which is free works too). Also load your laptop with MSRS 1.5 (refresh) from here. This is also free.

We all know there is some complexity using Microsoft Robotic Developer Studio (MRDS). However, once you learn some basic patterns, it all falls into place. In this workshop, we will kickoff two projects from scratch. Those who participate will see how easy it is to build robots using this technology once the basics are understood. The two projects are:

1) Deformable Object Manipulation - description:

There is growing interest in the robotics community to be able to manipulate "soft" deformable objects such as clothing. This project will use real hardware (Lynxmotion 6 jointed robotic arm) to grip and fold articles of clothing (socks), making some simplifying assumptions. The hardware will be provided. We will build the project together, step by step, sharing ideas along the way. You can be an observer if you want and you are free to jump in and do specific tasks if you feel motivated. The only prerequisite is software coding experience. At the end of this project, you should be proficient using MRDS, robotic arms, and deformable object manipulation.

2) RoboChamps - description:

This project involves solving the RoboChamps Amazed (http://www.robochamps.com/rc/Common/challenge.aspx) challenge. The objective is to successfully navigate a maze with an autonomous robot, avoiding traps and surprises. This is a simulated challenge and requires only Visual Studio, MRDS (formerly MSRS), and the challenge software. All those items are free. We anticipate a combination of collaborative and individual efforts performed at the meetings and at home.

Whether you want to participate in one or the other or just find out more about what is going on, all are welcome.

MSRS is a platform for building robotic applications. It takes time to acquire the skill sets to build powerful robots and I hope this will be a forum to come together, brings our skills to the table to build our skill sets both individually and as a group.

There is no better way to learn MSRS than to try to build something together as a team or individually with support from other members. We will discuss potential projects / competitions that members may be interested in working together as a group or individually.

We will also discuss how the various components of MSRS tie together. From the tutorials, it is easy to get lost on the big picture of how the various tools and services work together. We will try to clarify some of this.

I will also present an overview of MSRS to those of you who are new to the group.
